2016-2017
The following documentary is based upon five separate interviews conducted with people at the forefront of the so-called ‘marriage equality’ battle.
In September 2016 the Turnbull Government introduced a bill into parliament to enable a plebiscite on marriage equality in February 2017. Plebiscites do not have any legal force in Australia. The Marriage Act 1961 was arbitrarily amended by John Howard’s Government in 2004. In March 2016 a federal government investigation, some say a rushed investigation into the Safe Schools Education Program led to federal funding being made contingent on changes to the Program. Many community members believed these changes to be unworkable, so some state governments have bridged the funding shortfall.
